Ideal doubling instrument for intermediate flautists
The piccolo is quite a fiddly instrument to master and is normally learnt by flute students who already have a good grasp of basic technique and fingering. Yamaha’s YPC32 model is extremely comfortable to play making it a popular first piccolo for ambitious flautists looking to expand their skillset.
Its body dismantles into two sections. The smaller headjoint has a slightly conical bore and is made from silver-plated nickel silver which helps players to produce a rich and stable tone. The other half is made from Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), a resin polymer with renowned acoustic properties that has been used to build musical instruments – particularly clarinets – for more than a century. ABS is much stronger than traditional wood and is not affected by temperature or humidity. This makes the YPC32 picc very low maintenance and ideal for marching bands who often play outdoors.
All the piccolo’s keywork is also made from silver-plated nickel silver and includes a split E mechanism for improved consistency in the instrument’s upper register. Each key is shaped with a comfortable concave contour, and stainless steel springs ensure a reliable and responsive action. The whole mechanism is attached securely to the body with ribbed key posts.
Every Yamaha piccolo outfit comes in a hard shell case with a moulded interior, and includes some cork grease, cleaning rod, and polishing cloths.
