It incorporates a real Yamaha acoustic upright piano action, but has no strings - the sound is entirely digital and is sampled from the Yamaha CFX and Bosendorfer Imperial concert grand pianos, two of the world's finest instruments. The sound is cleverly modelled to give it the resonance you would expect from an acoustic instrument, and it also includes some great quality sampled strings, harpsichord, organ and electric piano sounds.

The overall footprint of the NU1X is much smaller than that of an acoustic piano too, much smaller than even the entry level model Yamaha B1 upright model, and as there is no iron frame or soundboard it is considerably lighter too.
