Stentor’s STN1551 Conservatoire viola is an ideal step-up instrument for advancing students. Hand crafted by experienced luthiers at the British based company’s world renowned factory in Taixing, China, only solid tone woods and natural glues are used in its construction ensuring that every instrument lives up to modern musicians’ exacting standards.
The viola features a solid spruce top and flamed maple back and sides, and is finished with a deluxe Shellax varnish. The lacquer enhances both the durability and resonance of the wood as well as making it look fantastic. All the fittings – fingerboard, tuning pegs, and chin rest – are made from dense ebony, and intricate inlaid purfling on the viola’s top completes the stunning appearance.
It is strung with long lasting synthetic core strings which produce the depth of tone expected from gut without the associated tuning stability issues. The lightweight metal tailpiece that holds the strings’ tension has adjustment screws built in to it for easy fine tuning.
Every outfit includes a well-balanced octagonal brazilwood bow with real horsehair and an ebony frog, as well as a block of rosin. Everything is supplied in a sturdy oblong case with a hygrometer and protective blanket. The case is lined with teal velboa and comes with detachable shoulder straps for ease of transportation. There is space inside for two bows plus strings and accessories, and a large exterior pocket for music.
