Eb tenor (alto) horn for beginners of any age
John Packer’s JP072MKII is an entry level full-sized Eb tenor horn (also sometimes called an alto or Eb horn) designed for beginners of any age. This second generation model has become particularly popular with schools and music services owing to its extremely reliable and robust build quality, and would make an excellent addition to any marching band’s arsenal.
The tenor horn’s tubing starts with a bore diameter of 0.459” (11.66mm) eventually flaring into an 8” (203.2mm) bell. It is made entirely from lacquered yellow brass which provides excellent projection and a bright tone. The horn is compactly wound and well balanced making it a very comfortable instrument to hold. Three waterkeys along the length allow the expulsion of moisture which can cause corrosion and blockages.
There are three top sprung nickel valves with durable stainless steel pistons attached to small lengths of cylindrical tubing that players press to change the tenor horn’s fundamental pitch. These valves should be oiled often to maintain a smooth and responsive action. The valve tubing length can be adjusted for fine tuning by sliding sections in or out, and these two should be greased regularly to prevent them seizing up.
Special features include a reinforced bell ring which improved the stability of the instrument’s tone and intonation, and a box for a lyre attachment (not included) that is used for holding music while marching. Like all John packer instruments, the tenor horn comes as an outfit that includes a semi-hard case with shoulder straps, a JP602 mouthpiece, a pot of valve oil, and some spare valve guides.
