Mini French horn outfit for beginners
The JP161 (Bb) and JP162 (F) are single French horns specially designed for students with small hands. Both are extremely comfortable to hold and easy to play making them ideal starter instruments. Most professional horn players use a double instrument – essentially a Bb and F horn stuck together – but opinions differ on the best configuration for beginners, so make sure you consult with your horn teacher before selecting your model.
French horn in F is the most common written pitch for the instrument, but students will quickly discover that understanding complex transposition at sight is a crucial part of learning the instrument. This hazard is unique to the horn and one of the main reasons so few young musicians take it up. However, for those that are willing to work hard, it is also a uniquely versatile and expressive instrument.
Bb horns are made from a slightly shorter length of tubing which means they are slightly lighter and more accurate in the upper register, while F horns have a fuller tone and a more comprehensive lower range. John Packer horns are made from yellow brass throughout which provides the greatest tonal capabilities possible and confident projection. The tubing includes a reinforcing bell ring which helps to stabilise intonation and improve tone at extreme volumes.
An adjustable duck’s foot finger ring ensuring a comfortable holding position for players with varied hand sizes. Each rotary valve mechanism uses a mechanical ball and socket joint which is more robust and long lasting than traditional string while neoprene bumpers also make the action more responsive.
Like all John Packer outfits, the JP161 and JP162 are supplied in a semi-hard moulded carry case and include everything an aspiring hornist needs: a JP612 4B mouthpiece and a pot of Ultra-Pure valve oil.
