Roland’s FP-50 is a sturdily built digital piano that, at only 16.5kg, is the ideal keyboard for gigging musicians. It is equipped with some fantastic acoustic and electric piano sounds, a huge collection of organs, strings, and General MIDI patches, as well as 90 rhythm accompaniments and numerous play-along songs.
Its action is great too and features 88 keys with ivory feel tops and escapement. The keyboard is fully weighted but very well balanced making it feel just as natural with piano or organ patches, and the overall touch sensitivity can also be manually adjusted.
All the acoustic piano sounds are provided by Roland's proprietary SuperNATURAL sound engine which models the complete sound of an acoustic instrument, rather than using the traditional method of looping samples together. The result is a natural and smooth attack and decay that is almost indistinguishable from the real thing.
Players can also micromanage individual string resonances and simulate various cabinet and soundboard behaviours. Other useful digital features include: tuning control including temperament selector for performing music from specific historic periods, adjustable ambience, rotary speaker effect, 4-band EQ, 2-track recording mode, key transpose, dual/split voices, and a metronome.
The instrument is available in two colours – black or white – and includes a transparent music shelf. There are two 12W amplifiers and two 8cm speakers built into the keyboard which produce adequate volume for practice. Naturally, a headphone port is also installed as well as stereo line out, MIDI, USB interface, and inputs for 3 pedals.
