Lightweight single French horn for beginners

French horns come in all sorts of different shapes and sizes and are notoriously difficult to master, but they are among the most beautiful and expressive instruments in the orchestra when played well, so it’s worth putting in the hours! The Elkhart brand represents the budget range from veteran brass makers Vincent Bach, and is famous for reliable entry level instruments. The 100FFH and 100BFH single French Horns are ideal starter models for young students owing to their simple lightweight design.
The nuances of French horn intonation and transposition are extremely complex so most advanced players use a double horn (essentially two single horns stuck together) but a single version is recommended for those who are learning the basics.
Single horns come in either Bb or F varieties, and different players recommend different instruments for beginners so make sure to consult with your teacher before investing. The Bb models are made from a shorter length of tubing making them lighter, more responsive, and more accurate in the upper register, while the F has a fuller tone and more complete lower register.
Both models have 3 stainless steel rotary valves with metal linkages, and a lining of cupronickel inside all valves and tuning slides to keep any mechanism from seizing up. The bulk of the instrument is made of durable yellow brass, but softer rose brass is used for the lead pipe and bell which allows inexperienced players to produce a good tone more easily at the expense of some volume.
Each horn is coated with a classic clear lacquer for further protection from the elements. Outfits include a semi-hard shaped case with rucksack style straps and a mouthpiece.
