Popular Eb tenor (alto) horn for beginners
The Elkhart brand represents the budget of instruments manufactured by Vincent Bach, and has become well known for producing reliable starter instruments. Their 100TH is a full sized Eb tenor horn (sometimes known as an alto horn or Eb horn) designed for beginners.
Its tubing is made from classic yellow brass with a clear lacquer finish and features hard wearing cupronickel tuning slides. The straight lead pipe has a bore diameter of 11.7mm (0.46”) and is made from softer rose brass which helps inexperienced players produce a consistent sound and control the horn’s pleasant tone more more easily.
At the other end is an 8” (203mm) upright bell that vibrates evenly and provides plenty of projection. Three stainless steel piston valves divert air through extra lengths of tubing to change the instrument’s pitch and should be oiled regularly to maintain a smooth action. There is a single waterkey on the main tuning slide which is used to empty the interior of unwanted moisture and so prevent corrosion.
A small clamp is also built into the valve block to which musicians can attach a lyre (not included) to hold music while marching with brass bands. The whole 100TH outfit comes supplied in a backpack style case with an Elkhart mouthpiece, a pot of valve oil, and a cleaning cloth.
